Registration Policies for Cat Breeds Recognised by the GCCF
In order for a cat to be registered as a particular breed, its pedigree must conform to the registration policy for that breed: it is not enough that it just looks like the breed in question - "look-alikes" can sometimes produce undesirable surprises in future generations. Registration policies are drawn up by the Breed Advisory Committees and must be approved by the GCCF Executive Committee before being placed on a GCCF Council agenda for final approval.
If you intend buying a kitten to breed from, please check the registration policy for that breed, or for the particular colour and/or pattern of that breed, as well as checking the registration policies for the colours and/or patterns which you wish to breed from it. In some breeds (Rexes, Maine Coons etc) all of the recognised colours and patterns may be mated together, but in other breeds (Persians, British Shorthairs) doing so may produce kittens which cannot be shown and which are not suitable for breeding from. If you do not understand the registration policy, please ask the GCCF how you can contact the Secretary of the relevant Breed Advisory Committee.

Only cats which are registered on the Full Register (its registration number will begin CS...), Supplementary Register (CSSR...) or Experimental Register (CSEXP...) may be shown.
When a breed is granted Preliminary Recognition, cats registered on the Reference Register (CSREF...) will be treated as if they were registered on the Experimental Register and may be shown, provided that they conform to the Registration Policy for the breed and have registered parents, grand-parents and great-grand-parents.
